World Pneumonia Day – November 12, 2011

November 12 is World Pneumonia Day, a day set aside to raise public awareness of the millions of childhood deaths that pneumonia causes each year and to encourage efforts to prevent and treat this deadly disease. Pneumonia is an infection occurring in one or both lungs, caused by any number of infectious organisms, such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi. According to the World Health Organization, pneumonia is the leading cause of death in children under the age of 5. Pneumonia kills almost 1.6 million children each year, more than AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria combined. Childhood pneumonia remains a serious health risk but is less widespread in the United States and other developed countries. Read full post…

KevinMD: Media is key to curbing MRI overuse

On the MedPage Today outlet KevinMD.com, Dr. Kevin Pho himself writes that media coverage of the overuse of certain screening procedures is long overdue, and praises The New York Times recent coverage of a study showing that in some cases MRIs can lead to more harm than good.

In the Times, reporter Gina Kolata explained, when unleashed upon the throwing shoulders of 31 healthy professional baseball pitchers, M.R.I.’s found abnormal shoulder cartilage in 90 percent of them and abnormal rotator cuff tendons in 87 percent. Its a result, Kolata wrote, that shows that MRIs are easily misinterpreted and can result in misdiagnoses leading to unnecessary or even harmful treatments.

Why Children Should Play in Daycare

Most children under the age of 12 have very little life experience beyond a classroom, their home or another childcare setting. These experiences are crucial for the social and mental development of a child and can have a very positive effect on the way an individual matures. Daycare is a great way to provide this and it often serves as a wonderful early memory for children.

One of the ways to help a child become well-rounded is to encourage them to be involved in social activities. Perhaps a child will do well in a sport or an art program offered through school but even then the child may come out with a specialized focus on one set of skills. Read full post…
