Seventeen Weeks

July 14, 2011 – 7:28 am

At seventeen weeks I find myself feeling extremely well. My Nausea has subsided and my energy has returned to near its full force. Most of my major food aversions have passed and I find myself wanting chocolate again, which is something I need to keep in check! Thanks to my lack of nausea and increased energy, I have been exercising five to six times per week and reaping the benefits of toned muscles!

My stomach is bulging a bit more than normal and some of my tops are a little tight in the stomach, but maternity tops are still much too big. I had to break out my belly band this week to accommodate my slightly expanded waist line. In all honesty, after trying on a few of my maternity pieces, I am not looking forward to wearing maternity clothes too soon yet.

Health officials trying to reduce obesity and improve eating habits at five San Antonio elementary schools unveiled a $2 million research project Wednesday that will photograph students’ lunch trays before they sit down to eat and later take a snapshot of the leftovers.

A computer program then analyzes the photos to identify every piece of food on the plate — right down to how many ounces are left in that lump of mash potatoes — and calculates the number of calories each student scarfed down.

The project, funded by a U.S. Department of Agriculture grant, is the first of its kind in the nation. The

Musical and Interactive Comparing Games for Preschoolers

July 13, 2011 – 10:58 pm

Sorting and comparing objects helps preschoolers discover how items are different and alike, and is crucial for developing math skills such as grouping. Children will learn these skills by playing fun, interactive comparison games sorting apples, jewels, shapes and animals.

Children learn best while playing. Incorporating preschool games into lessons about comparing will help students to grasp basic math concepts while enjoying their learning experience at the same time.

Kids love to dance, sing, and play, that is why your Pre-K class will love comparing shapes, sizes, and colors while doing the “Hokey Pokey”. The teacher will cut out different sized circles, squares, rectangles, triangles, and ovals out of a variety of colored paper for each student and laminate them.

Diagnosed autism is more common in an IT-rich region

July 13, 2011 – 3:37 pm

Research provides important insight into ‘systemizing’ theory of autism A new study from Cambridge University has for the first time found that autism diagnoses are more common in an IT-rich region. The Medical Research Council (MRC) funded study, published today in the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, has important implications for service provision in different regions and for the ‘hyper-systemizing’ theory of autism. Professor Simon Baron-Cohen, Director of the Autism Research Centre (ARC) at the University of Cambridge, led the study (which was conducted in the Netherlands) with Dr Rosa Hoekstra, a Dutch autism researcher based at ARC and The Open University.
