January 6, 2012 – 12:06 pm

L-carnitine is a derivative of lysine and methionine which are amino acids.  The L-carnitine gets synthesized primarily in the organs of the liver and kidneys.  From here it can be transported to other areas of the body.L-carnitine is predominantly found in the tissues that utilize fatty acids.  It is here that it is in the highest concentrations.  L-carnitine is used for dietary fuel and thus helps the skeletal muscles as well as the cardiac muscles of the body.L-carnitine supplementation is very useful for those seeking to burn fat and lose weight.  Acetyl L Carnitine works by helping speed fatty acid oxidation.Fatty acids are used by the body as energy.  Oxidation involves the process in which these fatty acids are broken down.  By breaking down these fatty acids and using them as energy sources, you ultimately lose fat.The fatty acids in the body cannot however get into the inner mitochondria membranes without L-carnitine.  Because L-carnitine transports these acids from the mitochondria membranes to the other areas of the body they are then able to be utilized in the oxidation of fats. The highest concentrations of L-carnitine in foods are to be found in red meat such as beef and lamb.  It is also available though in lower concentrations in some vegetables, white meats and grains.Though very few side effects are reported, in rare instances L-carnitine supplementation may cause an increased heart rate, blood pressure, give rise to fever and/or diarrhea.  However there are very infrequently these effects. The benefits of L-carnitine are, by contrast, many.  L-carnitinehelps to promote energy and delivers effective help with fat loss and weight loss.  L-carnitine also helps to transport the long chain fatty acids, allowing them to be used for energy.  Enhanced cognitive function has also been reported as cellular energy in the brain is improved.  The effects of again may be slowed and symptoms of depression lightened.  Cataracts can be prevented with L-carnitine supplementation and most bodily functions can be aided with this supplement.
