Written especially for any girl or parent who is tired of princesses sitting around waiting to be rescued, Bruce Lansky has created a series of reimagined fairy tale-like short stories where girls take charge of their lives and use their creativity and cleverness to solve a host of problems. The Girls to the Rescue series (Meadowbrook) has seven volumes, and this addition contains 25 of Lansky and his fans’ favorite stories from the anthology. These short stories are perfect for any upper elementary to early middle school girls who are just starting to dig into their reading lives and have an adventurous spirit or unstoppable imagination. Lansky’s tales draw from folklore worldwide and include stories with familiar elements like Cinderella’s appearance in “The Fairy Godmother’s Assistant” and new faces and stories like those in “Kamala and the Thieves” and “Keesha and the Rat.” The stories in Lansky’s Girls to the Rescue series and this, The Best of Girls to the Rescue, will give your growing girl 25 examples of young women who rely not on princes, pretty dresses and potions but on common sense, intellect and their own ingenuity to find positive pathways out of tricky situations. Our girls are growing up in a world where the values portrayed in entertainment and fashion are increasingly a stark departure from the values that we might want to impart to them as they become women in the world. We must take care of our girls and be thoughtful about the messages we are sending them through our words and actions and also through the stories we choose to share and the conversations those stories inspire. As you read each story with your girl, you can take the opportunity to talk about how the main character overcame her obstacles and what your girl might do in a similar, real-life situation. Your girl might even be inspired to write her own Girl to the Rescue story, starring herself and using her special skills, talents and ideas to save the day!
