Looks like Lake Erie, doesn’t it? It’s a stand-up paddle board surfer in Cardiff Reef, Calif.FAIRPORT HARBOR, Ohio — Here’s another way to catch the waves (small ones, of course) of Lake Erie: Lake Metroparks’ stand-up paddle boarding instruction and rental.
Last week, The Plain Dealer’s Debbi Snook wrote about ways average Clevelanders can get out on our beloved lake. Stand-up boarding is another good one for families.
Developed in the Hawaiian Islands, stand-up paddle boarding — or SUP — combines a core workout with being on open water. Kids will love it because it’s surfing; parents will like it because they can stand up with something that resembles stability to see the sights.
At Fairport Harbor Lakefront Park, Lake Metroparks has four boards for rent. You can take a class to get pointers before you go out on your own. Basic paddleboard classes are offered Saturdays at Fairport Harbor Lakefront Park between now and Aug. 27. Class is $15 including rental. Registration is required.
Rentals are available at the beach from 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day for $10
per hour.
